Hormones and Food

Hormones are chemical messengers. When they shift — during puberty, periods, or later in life — they turn up the volume on your neurodistinct traits. This changes how you eat.

Puberty

Puberty is a time of chemical chaos. For neurodistinct young people, it can completely rewire how your senses work and what food feels like.

Puberty changes food.

Foods you loved as a child might suddenly taste bitter, smell overwhelming, or feel wrong. Your tongue and nose are sending different signals now. You are not being difficult.Loved food now wrong? Senses changed. Not difficult.Food changed? Senses. Not difficult.Senses change.
Changing hormones can cause a drop in dopamine. Your brain looks for a quick fix — sudden cravings for sugar, crunch, or strong flavours. Your brain is self-medicating.Hormones drop dopamine. As your body changes, people might comment on it. If you have RSD, this feels like a physical blow. Your changing body belongs to you. No one has the right to comment.Body changing? People comment? Periods and Food

If you have periods, the hormone shifts each month can change your appetite, your sensory limits, and your energy. The week before a period can make everything feel louder and food feel harder.

If food feels impossible on certain days, that is your hormones, not your willpower. Eat whatever your body will accept. That is enough.

Finding Out Late in Life

Finding Out Late in Life

Late-Diagnosed

Many people find out they are autistic or ADHD later in life — in their thirties, forties, or fifties. For women, this often collides with perimenopause, when hormone levels drop.

When hormones drop, your traits can get much stronger. Strategies that worked before might stop working. You are not losing your mind. Your brain chemistry is changing.Hormones drop, traits stronger. Finding out late while processing hormonal shifts can trigger grief for your younger self. This drains your energy. Forgiving yourself is your main job right now.Late diagnosis plus hormones? The Double Awakening

The Double Awakening

The Double Awakening

Double Awakening

There is a name for what happens to neurodistinct people across the hormonal journey from puberty to perimenopause. It is called the double awakening. The first awakening is puberty — when hormones turn up the volume on your traits. The second awakening is perimenopause — when hormone levels drop and your traits shift again. Both are real. Both are biological. Neither means you are getting worse.

The double awakening. Puberty turns up traits. Perimenopause shifts them again. Both real. Both biological. Not getting worse.

Double awakening. Puberty and perimenopause. Both real. Not getting worse.

Two awakenings. Both real.

If you are a young person reading this, the first awakening is happening to you right now. Your brain and body are changing. Your senses, your appetite, your energy — they are all being rewritten. This is not your fault. It is not a regression. It is chemistry. If someone in your life is going through the second awakening, be patient. They are learning who they are all over again — this time without the mask.

Changing. Not your fault.

If a woman in your life — your mum, an aunt, a carer — is going through the second awakening, there is a page written for them in the adult edition. A grown-up can find it there.

When your hormones shift, your rules must soften. You do not owe anyone a perfect diet. You just need to care for the body you are in today.
